Clarity Matters Blog Tutorial: Poppets & Grid Work

Hello hello. Grace here!

I hope you are having an enjoyable weekend so far. Feeling crafty?!

We are joined this week by the very talented Josie Davidson, our good friend and Clarity Crafts Design Team Member. I will hand you over to our teacher for today…

Maya Parchment Poppet

There was a query in Groovi Worldwide on whether the circle duet grids can be made larger, as the person wanted to use an image that didn’t fit the centre area. My reply was that I’m afraid that they are a set size but there is a way of using a larger image in the centre of them. The new poppet plates were just perfect to demonstrate how this can be done.

The Perga Liner colours I used were B6, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, B3 and B8 for her hair and a blend of B1 and B10 for her skin. I added a dot of B3 on the front of the work for her eyes.

Ingredients

Maya Parchment Poppet (GRO-CN-42299-01)
Josie’s Joy Diagonal Circular Lace Duet (GRO-GG-42310-12)
Groovi Plate Mate for A5 Sq Grids (GRO-CO-41706-08)
A4 Black Super Foam (GRO-AC-41957-A4)
Black Duel Purpose Groovi Mat A4 (GRO-AC-40194-A4)
Groovi Embossing Tool 0.8mm – 1.3mm (GRO-AC-40026-XX)
Pergamano Excellent Mat (PER-AC-70075-XX)
1-Needle Bold Perforating Tool (PER-TO-70028-XX)
1-Needle Fine Perforating Tool (PER-TO-70035-XX)
2-Needle Fine Perforating Tool (PER-TO-70037-XX)
6mm Pergamano Ball Tool (PER-TO-70016-XX)
Perga Cutters (PER-TO-70042-XX)
Pergamano Scissors (PER-YO-70040-XX)
Roll-A-Tape Glue Runner (ACC-MS-31065-XX)
6×6 Card Blanks and Envelopes (ACC-CA-31671-66)
Plain Parchment (GRO-AC-40024-A4)
Groovi Guard (GRO-AC-40345-XX)
Groovi Tabs (GRO-AC-40437-XX)
Perga Glitter Bundle (PER-AC-70305-XX)
Perga Liners (PER-CO-70063-XX)
Dorso Oil (PER-CO-70066-XX)
Pergamano Blending Pen & Nibs (PER-AC-70300-XX)
Tumble Dryer Sheet
Fine Sandpaper

Method

Step 1. Trace your Poppet onto the parchment using the No 1 Groovi tool for the main part of the image and the No 2 tool for the circles but not the bells on her shoes.

Step 2. Turn your work over and position her inside the circle duet design. You will be perforating first and so you need the front of your parchment facing you.

Step 3. Perforate the holes in the plate with your bold single needle tool, working around the poppet design. Complete the circle perforations by rotating the parchment and relocating the perforations into the holes in the grid, working around your poppet design.

Step 4. Turn your work over and emboss the dots of the grid design inside your perforating, again avoiding your poppet design.

Step 5. Emboss all of the dots that you’ve already embossed with the No 2 tool, from the back of the work with No 2 Groovi tool.

Step 6. Colour the back of your Poppet with Perga Liners and blend with Dorso Oil.

Step 7. Now to stipple the fur. Lightly emboss the back of her collar, cuffs and pom pom with the 6mm Pergamano ball tool. Place the piece of sandpaper (rough side up) on a firm surface and your parchment on top of this face down. Lightly tap inside the area you wish to stipple with the fine single needle tool. If you are making very visible holes then you need to tap much lighter which will give a texture on the front of your work. Fill the areas with stippling and check on the front to see if there are any gaps which need filling. The area should be filled right up to the lines and fairly evenly spaced.

Step 8. A close up of the stippling can be seen from the front of the work in.

Step 9. I like to perforate any areas in the grid work that could be cut out with a fine 2-Needle tool (between the holes in any areas of the pattern). This gives the impression that the lacework goes behind your design. You could use a bold 2-Needle tool but as the needles are much thicker I think the fine tool gives a neater finish.

Step 10. Picot cut the circle grid design but not the inner ‘photo corners’ as these are not going to be used but add to the finished design.

Step 11. Add glitter to the snow. I like to add little dots of the sticky ink between the larger snowflakes to add more sparkle. Add to the parcel, her headwear and little dots randomly to give a little sparkle in the fur. To finish your card, cut out a blue and pink square of the designer paper, use brads to attach your work to these and stick to your card blank using the glue runner. Your Poppet project is finished!

A pretty design that could be used for any suitable plate, thanks for sharing the technique with us Josie. I have been using these grids for the Pocket Poppet card toppers but will add this project to my to do list.
Grace, I hope you all had another fabulous day yesterday & when I scrolled back to have another look at the photos you had posted I realised I had missed one of the most important ones – the vase you mom made for Mark & Alex – I bet she had it on her lap the whole way !! What a fantastic gift xx
