Clarity Matters Blog Tutorial: Christmas Poppet

Hello hello. Grace here!

I hope this finds you safe, happy and enjoying your weekend! Feeling creative?

I hope so! Because we’re joined today by the super talented Glynis Whitehead, our good friend and Clarity Crafts Design Team Member. She has generously put together a step-by-step project for us. It’s a lovely one, as usual, using the brand new Poppet Collection from Marina Fedotova, that Paul just launched on Create & Craft on Wednesday evening as the One Day Special.
I will hand you over to our teacher for today…

Ingredients

New Christmas Poppets – Melody A5 Sq Groovi Plate (GRO-CN-42292-01)
Nested Ovals Groovi Plate A5 Sq (GRO-PA-40036-03)
Lace 1 Groovi Border Plate (GRO-PA-40044-09)
Numbers, Ovals & Tags A6sq Groovi Plate Insert (GRO-WO-40133-11)
Plate Mate for A5 Sq Groovi Plate (I used Plate Mate for Grids*) (GRO-CO-41706-08)
(*There are a few combinations of plate mates to be found at claritycrafts.com)
Art Deco Alphabet Groovi Border Plate Mate (GRO-MA-40348-13)
A5 Clear Parchment (GRO-AC-40020-A5)
Pergaliner Pencils (PER-CO-70063-XX)
Perga Colours Exclusive Pens (PER-CO-70060-XX)
Dorso Oil (PER-CO-70066-XX)
Blending Nibs (PER-AC-70300-XX)
Embossing Shaders:
0.8mm (PER-TO-70456-XX)
1.0mm (PER-TO-70002-XX)
1.2mm (PER-TO-70003-XX)
Full Set (PER-TO-70457-XX)

Flower Perforating Tool (PER-TO-70018-XX)
Fine 2-Needle Tool (PER-TO-70037-XX)
Fresh Cut Nested Oval Picot Cut Dies (ACC-DI-30681-56)
Amazonia Companion Paper (ACC-CA-31662-88)
A White 7 x 7 Card Blank (ACC-CA-31672-77)

Method

Step 1. Attach the parchment over the nested circles and emboss the last two lines. Make sure to line up the parchment so that you will have room for the lace edge.

Step 2. Now place the insert into the plate mate and then put in the Poppet plate. Trace the face and hair of the Poppet with the fine end of PCE pen – number 21, the circles you wish to emboss with the number 2 tool of the Groovi tools (from the starter kit) and then the rest of it with the number 1 tool.

Step 3. Set the Lace 1 Border plate into the plate mate and line up the edges so that the two points of the lace pattern lay on the outer edge of the oval. When you have embossed this, keep the point of the tool in place and tilt the parchment so that the next point lays on the line. Carry on in this way until you have gone around the oval. If you encounter a gap, just adjust the pattern so that you can fill it – it will not be noticed.

Step 4. Shallow perforate with the Flower tool – in the border of the oval and a few into the picture to represent snowflakes. When spacing out the perforations in the border, line them up with the centre arch of the lace pattern.

Step 5. Time to emboss. Working on the back, use the number 2 tool to gently, gently emboss the flower perforations. Also the dots within the Poppet design. The whiteness happens with repeated strokes rather than heavy pressure. Use the shaders to emboss highlight into the hat, collar, skirt, wings and fur cuffs.

Step 6. Colour on the back using Pergaliner B pencils to begin with. Number 10 with a tiny bit of 11 mixed in for the flesh; 12 with a little bit of 3 blended in for the hair; 3 and 11 for the robins; 3 for the basket and 4 for the coat, hat, boots and wings of the fairy. If you use the blending nib without adding the pencil, you will get a lighter blue where you need it on the fur cuffs.
Use the Perga Colour Exclusives for the items in the basket, the holly and berries and add a couple of dots in the eyes. The PCE colours are 1, 7, 16 and 21.

Step 7. Deeply perforate all the Flower Perforations – give the tool a very tiny and gentle twist to enlarge the holes. Be careful with this as it is so easy to tear the parchment if you go too far.

Step 8. Use the 2-Needle tool to perforate inside the lace scallops and then around the outside. Make sure your hand is in a comfortable position and move the parchment around rather than your hand.

Step 9. Snip out the work. Do the centres of the scallops first and then the outside. When you snip out the inside bits, make sure you keep the points of the scissors towards the outline. Then the body of your scissors will be over the waist (the bit that drops out). Again, keep your hand in a comfortable position and turn the work as you go.

Step 10. Use the largest of the picot dies to cut an oval from some blue Amazonia Companion Paper, then attach your parchment piece with a couple of brads at the top and bottom. Then mount your finished artwork onto a 7 x 7 white card blank. Your project is complete!
