Clarity Matters Blog Tutorial: How to make a Decoupage Poinsettia
Hello hello! Grace here.
I hope this finds you safe, well and having a lovely weekend so far.
We are joined this week by the incredibly talented Maggie Byford, our good friend and Clarity Crafts Design Team Member. I will hand you over to our teacher for today…
How to make a Decoupage Poinsettia
Today I’ll be taking you through a few easy steps on how to make a lovely whitework decoupage Poinsettia using Jayne’s Poinsettia Groovi plate.
I’ve also given you the option to make a coloured version, if you prefer.
But whatever your choice, here are two versions of the same card you could be aiming for…
Ingredients
Nested Squares Picot Cut A4 Square Plate (GRO-PA-41035-15)
Jayne’s Poinsettia A5 Square Plate (GRO-CH-40387-03)
Barbara’s Christmas Sentiments A5 Square Plate (GRO-WO-41608-03)
Groovi A4 Clear Parchment Paper (GRO-AC-40024-A4)
1-Needle Bold Perforating Tool (PER-TO-70028-XX)
2-Needle Bold Perforating Tool (PER-TO-70279-XX)
Pergamano Excellent – Embossing Mat (PER-AC-70075-XX)
Groovi Embossing Tool 1 and 2 (0.8mm to 1.3mm) (GRO-AC-40026-XX)
Black Dual-Purpose Groovi Mat A4 (GRO-AC-40194-A4)
A4 Black Super Foam Mat (thick mat) (GRO-AC-41957-A4)
Groovi Sticker Tabs x 16 (GRO-AC-40437-XX)
Groovi Guard (GRO-AC-40345-XX)
Ringlock Scissors (PER-TO-70041-XX)
7” x 7” White Card Blanks & Envelopes x 10 (ACC-CA-31672-77)
Antarctica Companion Paper 8” x 8” Single Sided (ACC-CA-31655-88)
Pergamano Brads in Gold, Silver or White
Perga Liners Combi Box (A & B pencils) (PER-CO-70063-XX)
(I used B6 Dark Green, B7 Green, B8 Light Yellow, B11 Red and B15 Olive Green
but you can use similar colours in your own choice of blendable pencils)
Dorso Oil (PER-CO-70066-XX)
Perga Glitter with a hint of Gold or Silver (PER-AC-70252-XX) (optional)
Pergamano Sticky Ink (PER-AC-70134-XX) (optional)
Dry Tumble Dryer Sheet and a piece of kitchen paper
Method
Step 1. Centralise your parchment over the Poinsettia plate and attach with Groovi stickers. Wipe a dry tumble dryer sheet across the surface to make embossing easier, then use the Groovi Number 1 tool to emboss the poinsettia and those spruce twigs you can see on the picture.
Step 2. Using the Nested Squares Picot Cut plate, carefully centralise your parchment (with the front facing down) inside the second largest double-outline frame and emboss the straight lines. This is what you are aiming for.
Step 3. On the back of your parchment, use the Christmas Sentiments plate to emboss the greeting “With Love at Christmas” at the top right corner, then put to one side for later.
Step 4. To decoupage the Poinsettia we are going to create four embossed layers, starting with the largest layer first and ending with the smallest, in the order they are shown on the picture which is A, B, C then D. Each layer has some design elements missing which you’ll need to look out for, but all you need to do is emboss them just as shown.
Using the Poinsettia plate and a separate piece of A4 parchment position it so that the left part of your parchment is over the Poinsettia design and emboss the largest layer shown as A on the picture. Slightly move your parchment to the left so you can emboss layer B, then continue moving your parchment and embossing the remaining two layers C and D so it looks something like this.
Step 5. Place your work (with the front facing up) onto a thick perforating mat and use a 2-Needle Bold tool to perforate all the way around each of the four designs. As always, begin by perforating the angles first then simply join up the holes afterwards.
Here is what you are aiming for…
Step 6. Use ordinary scissors to cut out each layer, to make four separate pieces, then on the front of each piece use parchment scissors or snips to cut between all the 2-Needle perforations.
Step 7. Finishing. Use a 2-Needle Bold tool to perforate around the outside edges of the main parchment, then use parchment scissors or snips to cut between all the perforations using parchment scissors or snips.
Using Sticky Ink and a Pergamano mapping pen, add some glitter to the Poinsettia layers and to some parts of the spruce twigs on the main parchment. I used Perga Glitter with a hint of Silver.
Layer-up the four Poinsettia layers with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. Attach them together with a tiny strip of low tack tape rolled up with the sticky side on the outside and positioned over the stamens on the front of each layer, except the top one.
Cut out Red background paper or card to measure 6½“ square and attach your main parchment to the front of it using a brad in each corner. I used Silver brads.
Align and then attach the assembled Poinsettia layers over the Poinsettia design on your main parchment using a brad in the centre of the stamens, going through all layers including the Red background card. I used a White brad for this.
Mount everything onto the front of folded white card with a tape rubber or foam pads.
This is your finished whitework Poinsettia card…
Step 8. Optional colour-work. If you would like to colour your Poinsettia layers, follow Steps 1 to 4 then use coloured blendable pencils on the back in colours of your own choice (or take a look at the Ingredients List to see the pencils I used).
Blend the individual colours with Dorso Oil using folded kitchen paper or tissue, then follow Steps 5 and 6 for perforating and cutting. Finish off as mentioned in Step 7 (the glitter I used on the Poinsettia had a hint of Gold).
Here is what your decoupage Poinsettia could look like.
Here is the finished card…

Hi Grace & Maggie, up early this morning as I have to get OH to hospital for a 9am eye appointment so thought I would check in & see what you had lined up for us this week. Another pretty card from Maggie for us to make, adding the layers makes it look so different & also whether done in white or coloured in.
Another busy week but one consolation for Barbara & Paul is that there is no travelling up the M11.
Have a good week everyone x
