Clarity Matters Blog Tutorial: A Painted Face

Hi everyone, Paul here (again!)

I hope you are having an enjoyable weekend despite the weather. Although it is a perfect opportunity to stay inside and craft!

We are joined again this week by the super talented Glynis Whitehead, our good friend and Clarity Crafts Design Team Member. Following on from the step-by-step project from last week, Glynis is going to share with us all how to create the beautiful faces using the brand new Poppet Collection from Marina Fedotova.

I will hand you over to our teacher for today…

Ingredients

New Sprite Poppets – Maeve A5 Sq Groovi Plate (GRO-CN-42302-01)
Numbers, Ovals & Tags A6sq Groovi Plate Insert (GRO-WO-40133-11)
Plate Mate for A5 Sq Groovi Plate (I used Plate Mate for Grids*) (GRO-CO-41706-08)
(*There are a few combinations of plate mates to be found at claritycrafts.com)
A5 Clear Parchment (GRO-AC-40020-A5)
Pergaliner Pencils (PER-CO-70063-XX)
Perga Colours Exclusive Pens (PER-CO-70060-XX)
Dorso Oil (PER-CO-70066-XX)
Blending Nibs (PER-AC-70300-XX)

Pergamano Tools:
1.2mm (PER-TO-70003-XX)
Full Set (PER-TO-70457-XX)
3mm Ball Tool (PER-TO-70005-XX)
6mm Ball Tool (PER-TO-70016-XX)
Fine 1-Needle Tool (PER-TO-70035-XX)
Fine 2-Needle Tool (PER-TO-70037-XX)

Indian Summer Companion Paper (ACC-CA-31663-88)
Pergamano Sticky Ink (PER-AC-70134-XX)
Pergamano Perga Glitter (PER-AC-70252-XX)

Method

Step 1. Take the plate from the centre of the Plate Mate for A5sq Grids and insert into your Plate Mater. Attach the parchment and emboss the 3rd, 4th and 5th lines in from the edge, adding the dots that are in between the 4th and 5th lines.

Step 2. Put the adapter plate into the Plate Mate and the Poppet plate into that.  (*if you find there is a bit of movement in the plate, put a Groovi Tab across them to keep them steady).  Working on the back, as usual, trace the hair, face, arms and legs with the fine tip of the number 21 Perga Colours Exclusive pen.  The pupils of the eyes go in on the front later.   Use the number 1 & 2 tools to emboss the rest of the Sprite, using the number 2 tool on the skirt, ready for embossing.

Here is a larger image of the face

Step 3. For the face, use the Perga Liner B pencils numbers 3, 10, 11 and 12.  Lay down some of the peachy colour first and blend it out with a blending nib.

Step 4. Add a tiny bit of red for her cheeks and blend this into the peach colour.  The hair is coloured with B pencils numbers 3 and 12.  Put the darkest colour at the roots of the hair and the lighter colour between and blend them together.  Without adding more colour, take the blending nib to the ‘whispy’ bits of hair and add a cloud of colour.  Turn the work over to work on the front and add some pupils with the fine end of the PCE 21 pen.

Step 5. Emboss the folds of the skirt using a 1.2 shader tool.  Do a few layers to get the whiteness.  Use a 6mm ball tool to lightly emboss some highlights into the hair.

Step 6. I used a nib that had some blue pencil left on it to colour the wings. The clothes are coloured using B pencils numbers 5 and 14, blended out with some Dorso Oil and blending nibs.  Without adding any more pencil, use the blending nib with the purple on it to colour in between the embossing of the skirt.  Colour and blend in the margin too.  Use B7 to colour the frog.

Step 7. Go around all the corners, shallow perforating with the moon perforating tool.  7 in each direction fits nicely.  Use a 2 needle (Fine) tool to help you get the gap right, if you wish to put in another layer of perforations.

Step 8. Emboss withing the perforations with a 3mm ball tool – do three layers and do not worry if you squash any of the perforations, as you will be opening them up again when you reperforate.

Step 9. Reperforate the moon shapes on a deeper foam mat (*if you find it difficult to relocate the holes, open them up again using a fine 1 needle tool.)  Perforate between the ‘moons’ with the fine 2 needle tool.

Step 10. Picot cut out the piece, and attach it to a piece of Indian Summer Companion paper which is cut to 5.25 x 5.25 inches.  Then attach it to a 6 x 6 card blank.  Add some sticky ink and glitter to the wings, skirt and shoe laces.

What a perfect project! Don’t you just love the Poppets? Perfect for Christmas too.

Thank you so much, Glynis, for sharing this gorgeous bloggy tutorial with us. It is so clever how replacing the line art with a pen can make to faces. Don’t forget to share your versions on Groovi Worldwide.

Everything that Glynis has used in this particular project is available in a shopping list, HERE.

Thank you Glynis for another great step-by-step. Really appreciate your time and generosity in sharing your skills and tips and tricks.
Thanks Paul for the info for your shows on C&C this week. As I’m away will try to record your shows but after sitting down to watch my recordings of Deborah yesterday, only to find they didn’t “track” I am not that hopeful.

Lynn are you using Virgin TV to record? I found a couple of weeks ago when we were going to be away for the shows & put them to record as I knew the times but Virgin were only showing something like ‘watch an hour of craft hobbies & arts’ so when they replaced with the right programme title it didn’t record – so annoying. I emailed C&C but they said that was down to Virgin not them.

Thanks Paul & Glynis for todays blog. Glynis the step by step instructions look great & I will try it out on another plate with a face as I haven’t got this poppet yet.
Its definitely a day for staying indoors as still very damp although not torrential rain like we had yesterday – yet!!
The TV shows aren’t listed yet on Virgin TV so no good putting to record as once they change the title the record request doesn’t happen so must remember to do it later in the week.
    Have a good week everyone

Lovely design thank you Glynis & Paul. I’m still trying to decide which Groovi poppets to get, I have all the stamps so don’t need all the Groovi ones.

Wet here so will be crafting. Hope everyone has a good weekend. Also wishing Barb and Dave and family a great weekend and remainder of their break xx
