Clarity’s Blog Tutorial: How To Use A Stencil To Create A Groovi Pattern

Hello hello! Grace here.

I hope this finds you well?

As you have likely already heard, this weekend we’re having a celebration! Under normal circumstances many of you would be gathering in a town hall in Ditton, to participate in Clarity’s Open Days! But alas… we’re not quite there yet.

Better safe than sorry, we say! But you know us at Clarity… we can’t pass up the opportunity to gather online. It’s better than nothing! It’ll be fun. So we’re celebrating in a handful of ways that we know you’ll enjoy…

  • Our 25% off blanket sale on the Clarity website – Friday to Monday at midnight! It’s already begun, go check it out! ๐Ÿ™‚
  • We’re sending gifts when you place an order for ยฃ30+ (paper flowers! Love them)
  • Giveaways! SO MANY giveaways. Make sure to keep an eye on both Mum’s blog and this ‘ere ClarityMatters blog to enter each one for a chance to win big! There was a warm up giveaway yesterday, and there will be new ones appearing throughout the weekend! (there’s even one in this blog!)
  • A 7pm Moment of Clarity Craftalong tonight! (you can find what you need here)
  • And then… a Pyjama Party! Following the Craftalong, there will be a small break. Grab your pj’s and come back for another project!
  • A Facebook coffee hang on Sunday morning at 10am with Barbara & Linda ๐Ÿ™‚

So many great things!! And while we’re at it, we’ve decided to double up on our weekly Clarity Blog Tutorials. As well as our usual step-by-step project on Sunday… we’ve got the absolutely brilliant Jane Telford in the mix, to help kick off our #ClarityOpenDayFestival with a stunning new project!

There’s lots of learning to be had at these opens day, so as well as the Craftalongs… we want to share a little extra! I’ll hand you over to the lovely Jane…

Something a bit different from me today!

This one looks like quite a simple one but I would say it is suitable for a beginner with a bit of experience. If you are more experienced you could add more picot cutting to it or make a lacy edge. The choice is yours how far you take it!

I decided that I would use a stencil to get my main image so you don’t have the safety net of the Groovi when you are doing the initial embossing. Just go easy and try to keep your pressure as even as you can when tracing  round each shape in the stencil. Have a practice on some scrap to start with so you get the feel for it.

Ingredients

NDSC 14 Elephant Stencil (STE-AN-00270-77)
Groovi GO A6 Groovi Plate Mate (GRO-MA-40748-18)
Tina’s Doodle Flowers A6 Groovi Plate Set (GRO-FL-40806-02)
Nested Sq Picot Dies (ACC-DI-30666-66)
Nested Squares Picot Cut A4 Sq Groovi Plate (GRO-PA-41035-15)
Straight Basic Bold A5 Sq Groovi Piercing Grid (GRO-GG-40202-12)
Iris & Wisteria x 10 Groovi Duo Parchment Paper A4 (GRO-AC-40766-A4
Small Piece of Plain Parchment (GRO-AC-40024-XX)
8×8 Card Blank (ACC-CA-30620-88)
4 White Brads (PER-AC-70269-XX)
1mm Ball Tool (PER-TO-70012-XX)
1.5mm Ball Tool (PER-TO-70004-XX)
4.5mm Ball Tool (PER-TO-70015-XX)
6mm Ball Tool (PER-TO-70016-XX)
Pergamano Embossing Mat Excellent (PER-AC-70075-XX)
Shader Embossing Tool (PER-TO-70003-XX)
Sweet Dreams Designer Paper (ACC-CA-30442-88)
Perga Glue (PER-AC-70133-XX)
Sequins

Method

Step 1. Using the deeper of the two tone parchment pack cut a square using the largest Square Picot die.

Step 2. Attach the parchment to the matching Groovi plate using Groovi tabs in the corners  and emboss the largest double line.

Step 3. Hold the parchment down with the Groovi guard and remove the tabs to emboss the corners.

Step 4. Use a small sticky note to mark the front and then position the parchment over the stencil and attach it using Groovi Tabs to the back of the parchment.

Step 5. Turn the stencil and attached parchment over and place on the black mat (or pink excellent mat if you prefer).

Step 6. Using a 1mm embossing tool carefully run this around each shape in the stencil being careful not to pierce the parchment. It is better to do several lighter lines than one heavy one. keep checking your pressure by looking at the front.

Step 7. Check all sections are complete.

Step 8. Leave the stencil in place and position different sections over the doodle flowers plates and emboss the pattern you can see. Do random sections using different patterns leaving some sections blank.

Step 9. On the sections without patterns fill some of them with embossed dots using the Straight bold grid leaving some blank.

Now remove the stencil.

Step 10. Emboss the leaf to look like he is holding it with his trunk.

Step 11. Emboss the stems and flowers in front of him and then the bird on the elephant’s back.

Step 12. Write the sentiment out on a sticky note then on a piece of plain parchment make a template.

Step 13. Attach the template to the reverse of the elephant image using a Groovi tab so it can flip back and forth. Use the template to position the letters of the sentiment the flip out of the way to emboss each letter in turn. Keep hold of the templates for future use.

Step 14. Do some white work in small areas of the design.

Step 15. Cut 1 cm off each side of the piece of designer paper then attach the parchment picture to it using white brads.

Top Tip: To get your brads to sit really flat when you open them out press them open. On a firm surface use the flat end of a blending tool to push them flatter. Doing this helps when attaching to a card blank.

Step 16. Attach to an 8×8 card blank then add some sequins for that added sparkle.

And you’re all done!

WOW! What a beautiful card. Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks with us, Jane!

Everything is listed in one place over on the Clarity website HERE to make it easy to find everything that Jane has used – don’t forget, everything has 25% off as part of our Open Day Festival Event!

I might have to give this one a try myself! I LOVE elephants. My office here in Brooklyn has a slight elephant theme emerging, now that I turn around and pay attention…

‘Elephants have a positive symbolic meaning all over the world, and they are considered to be a symbol of good luck, power, success, wisdom, and experience. Because elephants are highly social animals, they are also regarded as a symbol of loyalty, companionship, and unity.’

I better buy some more elephant themed stuff!! We have a handful of lovely Elephant themed goods at Clarity, but I could do with making the theme official! Perhaps a handmade card framed on the wall will do the trick ๐Ÿ˜‰

Since this is such a fabulous card for those starting out, how about a giveaway?

Let me know in the comments below what YOUR favourite animal is and why (and don’t forget to tell me how brilliant Jane’s project is!) and I’ll enter you into a raffle to win the Groovi GO Starter Kit. I’ll pick two lucky winners, because why not?!

Groovi Go! Starter Kit

Make sure to tune in to our Moment of Clarity tonight at 7pm (UK time) and bring your PJ’s for the pyjama party afterwards! I know that’s where I want to be on a Friday night!

Also, if you fancy seeing your SHAC artwork showcases in my Saturday Share blog, post it to Clarity Worldwide with the hashtag ‘#SHACSHARE’ ๐Ÿ™‚

See you there!

Lotsa love, Grace & Jane xo

My favourite animal is the orangutan, I was lucky to go to Borneo where I not only visited a orphanage to see the great work they do but saw one in the wild. They are so beautiful and so intelligent it make me weep to think of their habitat disappearing.

Mine really is an elephant, I love its symbolic status. I will tell a quick Jackanory. I trained a group of young Indian’s when the company I work for out sourced. They gifted me my first elephant. I’ve been collecting ever since, mostly gifts from friends holidays abroad, its lovely to get a traveled Nellie gift and all have a place in my home. Xx

Hi Grace. I really enjoyed last night, love watching your mum and listening to her. I am not so good at stamps so didn’t craft. My story is . I got to know about Barbara through a friend that used to have a monthly class. Then I saw on Facebook that clarity were heading up North to port sunlight stamp show. With a friend we went on the train. When we got to the show we had no ticket, so couldn’t go in. Then they said if we came back at 4, we could go in for the last hour. That’s when I got to meet your Mum and Maria. Right at the beginning of groovi, still have the sample she made for me. Been hooked ever since. Still an awful lot to learn.
      Keep safe. Xxxx

Favourite animal, has to be a cat. I have 2 who we live with, they donโ€™t live with us, it’s definitely us with them. We know whoโ€™s in charge. If you want the best seat in the house move the cat. Know wonder Barbara has found the Viking kittens such a joy during lockdown. Jane’s projects are always very inspirational. Glad to be spending the weekend with Clarity. xx

My favourite animal has to be the horse. Went riding as a child and also had a holiday pony trekking in the welsh valleys. The horse has played such a large part in agriculture and transport through the years, as well as leisure activities. Love to see the old pictures of them working on the farms and pulling canal barges…so much more picturesque than tractors.

Great tutorial! My favourite animal is a dog- especially English Springer Spaniels. My current one is a black and white dog called Alfie- heโ€™s my 6th ESS. I love them because they give their all, theyโ€™re loyal, hard working and brilliant with children. And they know just when to turn the charm on! Alfie keeps me very active with long walks and is a great companion- except when he rolls in something extremely smelly!

Wow – beautiful artwork and love the facts about the elephant which is one of my favourite animals. In fact I just finished a crochet elephant for a new baby, so I’ll include them in the gift. I do love dolphins though – so smily, fun loving, social and we are lucky enough to live near the Moray coast in Scotland where you can sometimes see them from the shore x

    Hello Grace and Jane,
What a fabulous project, thank you Jane. Will have to give this one a go.
I have two favourite animals, elephants because of their strong matriarchal ethos and they are so majestic.
My other favourite animals are orangutans, don’t know why, just love them. Coincidentally when my younger granddaughter was born she resembled a baby orangutan with her shock of auburn hair and her almond shaped eyes (she has Down’s Syndrome). The resemblance didn’t last long and she is now a pretty seven year old with beautiful hair.

My favourite creature is the blue tits. They remind me of our previous house where each year the blue tits made their nest in our box and year after year they rewarded us with the pleasure of watching them rear their young and take flight.

Jane’s project is absolutely gorgeous, and so adaptable too, add extra flowers to make it more girly, take them for someone who’s not so keen, and add some more fun elements like the bird for a child. Great job ๐Ÿ™‚

I think my favourite animal is a cat. We had them as pets when I was a child, and provided you’ve got a friendly cat, they can be such a comfort when they curl up on your lap and purr. That said, for the sake of the garden birds we didn’t get a new one when our last one died. If you’d asked for my favourite garden bird – that’s easy – Long Tailed Tits every time.

    Take care everyone, Claire x

My favourite animal is the gorilla. From seeing Guy at London Zoo as a child (and his statue in Crystal Palace Park) to those bred at Howletts. That magical moment with David Attenborough on TV. The calmness and tranquillity these magnificent animals exude is indescribable. I can stand and watch them for hours.

Polar bears. Have had to kerb myself, they are everywhere. From pictures on walls, ornaments on every surface, umpteen cross stitches framed (from a time when I could do stitching sadly no more). Lladro polar bears safe in glass cabinet.
I find them compelling, elegant and cuddly especially the cubs, but strong and dangerous hunters. Sadly in this mad world they are in danger of being lost forever as their environment disappears. Think I’ll go and cuddle one of my many soft toys now.

Another smashing project to try – thanks Jane.
Unfortunately my award winning pen and ink drawing of an elephant was lost in our move and I haven’t had the heart to do another. It wouldn’t be the same. However this project would be a good one to hang in it’s place.
I do not have any animals but do love elephants (they are so caring of their young), Meercats (cute and amusing), the humpback whales (with their deep songs andmajestic flutes), any of the big cats (especially the Bengal tiger which has such a beautiful face), dolphins and peacocks. Great subjects to paint.
    Keep crafing, stay safe.

Our neighbours are Sri Lanka and go back regularly (when permitted) as they have family there, sadly his Mum has just died and, of course he hadnโ€™t seen her for over a year – I digress, anyway they usually bring me back an elephant of some sort, key ring, small ornament and I did read you should have their trunk facing a door for good luck, not always possible but luck isnโ€™t reality lacking in this house touch wood. Iโ€™m a cat person but love all animals, saw grand-dog yesterday which was lovely as hadnโ€™t seen him since October ! X

Fabulous tutorial and the card is beautiful! I love cats as a pet type of animal. We can’t have them now due to our health problems but loved the ones we have had in the past. They are so calming and cuddly. I have always liked cows too. They have lovely big eyes and I remember my Grandad working with cows on a farm and I remember stroking the little calves. A rare happy childhood memory. A fab weekend celebration, thank you! xxx

My favourite animals are rabbits and hares. The gentle way they go about their lives is always soothing for my soul. Even watching hares boxing is so balletic. They do even interact with us humans. I have had rabbits that are so sensitive that when I suffered from a mental breakdown…they would sense when I was at my lowest they would nudge me with their noses till I picked them up and they’d sit on my lap letting me cuddle and stroke them, until the mood brightened and I was back with it again. They are easy to litter-tray train and are so comical when they hop, skip and jump and I even had 1 who used to grab a piece of newspaper from his hutch floor and dance around my legs with his paper in his mouth! It breaks my heart to see them just kept locked in hutches at the bottom of gardens with little human attention…..they deserve so much more and will repay your affection.

I will have to try this brilliant project. My favourite animal is the cat. We have been ‘owned’ by several over the years and all have had their different personality.

Hi Grace, Hi Jane, Wow, the elephant groovi card is stunning, I love everything you have done on this make.
My favourite animal is my cat Lizzie, she is all black apart from a few grey hairs coming out, she is 15 next month, and I love her to bits, although she is sat next to me at present ‘demanding’ her supper with those big eyes, she melts me haha.
    Enjoy your weekend.
Lots of love from Patricia xx

Beautiful card Jane! My favourite animals are dogs, for no other reason than the joy and unconditional love that they have brought to our family over the many years.

I love animals but my dog Barry, a career changed guide dog is a star. He cannot cope with walking on certain floors, so have strips of carpet over vinyl etc, cannot eat unless his bowl is in the right place and so many other Barryisms as we call them hence having to be withdrawn from training. Other than that he is a big gentle beautifully mannered gentleman who loves everybody.

    Hi Grace and Jane
My favourite animal is a dolphin. They are such intelligent creatures. Beautiful when they are swimming out in the open waters in their pods jumping and leaping to great heights. Loved Jane’s tutorial really got me thinking of what other Clarity stencils I have that I could use this technique.
Loved the virtual pajama party last evening.

I am amazed that a stencil can be used in such a way. A new opportunity opens up. I think lots of practice will be needed for me!!!

My favourite animal is my own dog, and English Cocker Spaniel. Without him I’d be lost in this world. It’s as simple as that. He’s got me through a really rubbish year. I also love elephants, especially baby ones. And of course EVERY project Jane does is A-MA-Zing!

My favourite animal is an elephant. We went to India and I got to ride an elephant bareback. It was such an emotional thing to do. There were four of us in the party and no one else would do it. Now I am looking to see if I can visit the elephant hospital in Thailand and become a mahoot for the day.

Grace what a stunning sunrise ๐ŸŒ… and great view you have ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜ Loved our 7-11 Ctaftalong/PJ party, definitely needs to be repeated ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜‚Thank you for working so late to get this done. So interesting to read new facts about lovely elephants ๐Ÿ˜
Jane another gorgeous piece of art, what clever use of a stencil. ๐Ÿฅฐ I’ll definitely give it a try once I get my crafting/colouring mojo back again.
My favourite animal is the majestic, beautiful and impressive tiger ๐Ÿ…After always wanting one all my life at 49 in 2018 I was able to finally get the mini version, a rescue a cat. I gave her my nickname from childhood “Rani” meaning Queen or Princess. She’s brought so much love, joy, peace and happiness into my life. She’s my little fur baby/angel/nurse rolled into one, she’s been my shadow from day one, but especially when I’m really suffering from my chronic illnesses ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ˜ป I’ve also always loved butterflies๐Ÿฆ‹ They are a perfect example of how to deal with the changes life brings us, from crawling along as a little caterpillar, to emerging from it’s cocoon, after seemingly no activity, into a beautiful and delicate winged creature, spreading beauty, elegance and happiness wherever it flies ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ’•๐ŸŒˆ

One of my favourite animals is the penguin. This is because I feel so sorry for them!! The way they have to huddle together in the freezing cold and have their baby in between their feet. Also the miles they have to travel to get food. Everything they do seems to be an enormous ordeal that must take inredible amounts of inner strength and determination. Lots of love xx
