Sharing Saturday!

Ello ello! Grace here.

How’s your weekend treating you?

I’m still over here… packing multiple bags to go 2 hours away 😉

Oh to travel. Now, I know that the world has turned upside down since March (ish) and traveling ‘properly’ is off the cards for most of us for a while…
But this little mini trip (staying within our own state, 2 hour drive North to a lake house) has got me thinking about how travel can affect you as a person.
Even the little trips. But the big trips?! Personality changing potentially!

I want to share this poem with you in hopes that it inspires you to start thinking ahead for your next trips! Even if it’s just a couple of hours away. A mini getaway.

This poem might make you think of a trip of your own. An ‘island’ (I think) is just an analogy for wherever you went. For me… this poem makes me think of South Africa. I was there for a month when I was 19 years old.
11 years ago! Spent most of my time barefoot in a dusty township playing with/teaching 140 beautiful children. And I’ve never been quite the same since and I’ve never seen the world the same since. Egypt, the Maldives… both affected me in completely different ways at a young age. And now not being able to go anywhere, I’m relying on those memories. And they’re way more accessible now. Because I need them now…

I wonder who I would be if I had never gone on any of those trips? Food for thought.

If Once You Have Slept on an Island

If once you have slept on an island
 You’ll never be quite the same;
You may look as you looked the day before
And go by the same old name,

You may bustle about in street and shop;
You may sit at home and sew,
But you’ll see blue water and wheeling gulls
Wherever your feet may go.

You may chat with the neighbors of this and that
And close to your fire keep,
But you’ll hear ship whistle and lighthouse bell
And tides beat through your sleep.

Oh, you won’t know why, and you can’t say how
Such change upon you came,
But – once you have slept on an island
You’ll never be quite the same!

Rachel Field (1894–1942)

I see their faces more often than I’d care to admit xx

That is why traveling is so important.

I’ve decided that when the world is back to ‘normal’ and I’ve done all the family visits and trips to see the people I need to see… I’m going back to South Africa for a visit. It’s just something I have to do. Mark said he’ll come with me 🙂

What trip had an impact on you? Any kind of impact.

On that HAPPY note… There has been A LOT of artwork shared online in the last week because of #HappyDaysClarity Days – So many lovely projects. But I soldiered on through the piles of impressive artwork and got suuuuuper selective. Here are my FAVOURITE pieces of the week!

“And just like that, the world tipped on its axis… and everything fell off the table”.

I suppose we better start putting things back on the table 🙂

Have a great week! I’m off to the countryside!

Lotsa love, Grace xoxo

For me, my first trip to Malawi was life changing. We talk of poverty in this country but we have little concept of how well off we are. The majority of the population in Malawi lives in real poverty but for all that, Malawi is the warm heart of Africa. The people are incredibly friendly and have hearts of gold. They are rich in ways that we can hardly begin to imagine and I just loved it. I returned three years later and that was three years ago. I may never be back now. I don’t know but what is important is that I have been and experienced something of their lives from my privileged position and I have experienced the love and the kindness of those who are now friends. They had what almost became a mantra: God is good – and they are incredibly thankful for every little thing they have unlike us. Maybe we needed corona virus to bring us to our senses and for a while I thought there might be change. Now what is see is so many picking up the lives they had before and carrying on as normal. However, I live in hope and the one thing I hope today is that you have a fantastic break at the lake with your friends. Just relax and enjoy yourselves. Safe journey and stay safe. Beautiful choice of cards again today, as always. Hxx

Stunning pieces of work that you have shared.
We have not travelled very much, four children stretched the finances a lot then hubby got cancer and getting travel insurance became very expensive as well. He is ok but we tend to stay in good old UK. I love to hear about other people’s trips though .

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your trip to South Africa. They were a good start to my day. The poem is lovely too.

After my dad passed away my mother and I took a trip to Rome. In addition to Rome being such an amazing place, I got to know my mom as a friend. We’ve been on two trips together since and now chat every day. We had been hoping to make another trip this year, but well, life happened.

Enjoy your lake trip. We’ve been to Lake George a couple of times. Just sitting in a house by a lake and surrounded by trees is so peaceful.

Lovely poem Grace and those pics are wonderful. I lived in SA for 21 years, so I understand. I have been lucky enough to travel to many places, but I long to return to Vancouver, to see my daughter and 3 grandchildren again. It is our 50th wedding anniversary next year and we were planning a big trip, but now who knows?
Have a wonderful week away with Mark and your friends and stay safe. Hugs. Annette X

Gret pics, great poem, lovely artwork. Holidays abroad have been a disaster for me – all 3 of them – so I now enjoy the wonderful countryside we have here. In fact since hubby retired life has been one long holiday – ha ha !!!
Enjoy your break and stay safe.

Now in my 70s and disabled, I am so glad I travelled so much when young. I worked in Hong Kong (on an island an hour off the mainland) for some months , with handicapped children, before joining up with a good friend and hitch-hiking around Japan for 3 weeks, then taking a motor launch across to USSR (as it was in 1969) and spending another 3 weeks on the trans Siberian ”express” stopping off several times before having a few days in Moscow and Leningrad before taking another train to Helsinki and after a few days there, flew to London. I’ve had many trip since, including round the world (stopping in the land where I grew up – Australia -for 2 years!) by ship. We had stops in many countries, including Hawaii!
Enjoy your trip. I don’t think we can do trips like that in the UK yet.
