Clarity’s Blog Tutorial: How to Create Shaded White Work

Hello hello! Grace here.

Happy Sunday! I hope this finds you calm and enjoying your ‘day of rest’.
As you know, we have been releasing bloggy tutorials throughout the month of January! You seem to love them so much, that we’ve decided to start releasing them every Sunday for the foreseeable future, not just this month! and not sporadically. So you know when and where they will be! Here on Clarity Matters and always on Sunday! Simples.

And we’ll be shifting my Share blog back to Saturday, where it used to be. Also simples.

Please bear with us whilst we figure out the best schedule for everything. I know we’re shifting things around a bit, but there are a lot of moving parts at this end and we’re almost there! πŸ™‚

Here’s a little breakdown, for some Clarity…

CLARITY MATTERS BLOG
Tuesday: The Weekly Update Blog
Friday: The SHAC Blog (The SHAC SHAC & Groovi SHAC all in one place)
Saturday: A Saturday Sharing of your artwork!
Sunday: Clarity’s Groovi Sunday – Bloggy tutorials

So… now for today’s bloggy tutorial, since it’s Clarity’s Groovi Sunday!

The fabulous Linda Williams is back to share her skills and techniques with us. How blessed are we? Blessed with the best! I’ll hand you over to the pro…

Ingredients

A4 square Plate Mate (GRO-WO-40875-21)
Nested Scallops Squares Ext. A4 Square Groovi Plate (GRO-WO-41168-15)
123 Butterfly, Lavender & Mallow A4 Square Groovi Plate (GRO-FL-40990-15)
Fresh Cut Nested Square Picot Dies
Picot Foam (GRO-AC-40625-XX)
Super Foam (GRO-AC-40603-A4)
Pergamano Embossing Mat (PER-AC-70075-XX)
No 1 and 2 Groovi Embossing Tool (GRO-AC-40026-XX)
Pergamano Ball Embossing tools 6mm, 4.5mm, 3mm, 1.5mm and 1mm (PER-TO-70244-XX
Pergamano 2-needle fine perforating tool (PER-TO-70037-XX)
Pergamano Scissors or snips
Pergamano Dorso oil (PER-CO-70066-XX)
Pergamano Blending pen and nibs (PER-AC-70300-XX)
4 x white Pergamano Brads (PER-AC-70269-XX)
Groovi Guard and Groovi Tabs
Perga liner pencils (PER-CO-70063-XX)
Faber-Castell eraser (ACC-PE-30611-XX)
Regular Parchment Paper (GRO-AC-40024-XX)
Blue A4 Two Tone Parchment Paper (GRO-AC-41404-A4)
White Card stock
8″ x 8″ card blank (ACC-CA-30620-88)
Double sided tape (ACC-AD-30375-XX)

Step 1
Emboss the frame from the Nested Scallops Squares Extension A4 Square Groovi Plate using the number 1 Groovi tool. You can also add another row of scallops around the inner frame too if you so wish. See finished project. The choice is yours.

Step 2
Now use the 123 Butterfly, Lavender & Mallow A4 Square Groovi Plate.  First emboss the largest butterfly in the corner, do not emboss the circle. I left out the dots on the wings. Make sure the butterfly fills the corner so you will have to move your parchment about to make it fit. Use the number 1 Groovi tool to emboss the antennae and the number 2 Groovi tool, lightly, for the rest of the butterfly. Using the number 2 Groovi tool very lightly creates the faintest outlines.

Step 3
Emboss more butterflies in the same way. With the smaller butterflies I left out some of the smaller details in order to give me more room for my shadow embossing (see picture). With the number 1 Groovi tool emboss the butterfly trails moving your parchment around to make them fit.

Step 4
Now start your shadow embossing on the back of your work. Do this in many light layers leaving your parchment to rest in between layers. Start with the largest tool you can fit into the area and then gradually work your way down to the smaller tools. Always remember to check that you are working on the back of the parchment and regularly check the front of the work to see how it looks. With your parchment face down on the embossing mat and using the 6mm ball tool lightly emboss all the butterflies. If you find the 6mm ball tool too big for the smaller butterflies use the 4.5mm ball tool. Do not emboss the areas that have been coloured blue (see finished sample). Emboss from the outer edges in towards the centre. Try to curve your embossed lines in the shape of the wings. The body and the antennae tips can be embossed with the 3mm ball tool. Also, with the 4.5mm ball tool, emboss alternate scallops on the borders.

Step 5
After your parchment has rested emboss another layer. Use the 6mm on the large butterfly and the 4.5mm ball tool for the medium and small butterflies. Use the 3mm ball tool for the body of the larger butterfly and the 1.5mm ball tool for the bodies of the medium and small butterflies. Also emboss the alternate scallops again.

Step 6
After the parchment has rested repeat step 5 (see picture 6a). Now emboss words of your choice in the borders. I made templates to make sure I got the words in the right place. I used the alphabet on the Nested Scallops Squares Extension plate.

Step 7
Emboss another light layer.

Step 8
Now is the time to be selective about what you make whiter. Choose only some areas to whiten; this will give you contrast, depth and a more realistic looking subject. At this point I will start moving down the tool sizes. I used the 4.5mm ball tool for the large butterfly, the 3mm ball tool for the medium butterfly and the 1.5mm ball tool for the small butterflies. Use the 3mm ball tool for the scallops.

Step 9
Repeat step 8 if need be, but know when to stop. It all depends on how heavy handed you are to begin with. See how it should look on the front!

Step 10
Now for some serious finishing off! Using the smaller tools to add in any detail you may want to enhance your embossing. Keep checking the front. I added some finer detail with the 3mm, 1.5mm and 1mm ball tools. Notice how I have embossed some of the wings from the inside edge outwards with the smaller tools. Lots of embossing you may say! But it pays off to slow down. This project has taken me 7 days to complete, just adding a fine layer of embossing each day. They call it dedication!!!!

Step 11
Using B4 from the Pergaliner set, dorso within the outer and inner frame. I used a folded tissue to blend. Also dorso the alternate scallops, use the blending nibs for this.

Step 12
Following the pictures; add some colour on the back (12a back view, 12b front view). I did not want a great deal of colour here so I just used the residual colour that was left on the blending nibs. With a very sharp pencil I add some fine lines for the darkest areas.

Step 13
Place your work right side up, onto the perforating mat. Use the 2 needle fine perforating tool to perforate around the outside of the inner and outer scallops. With the Pergamano scissors picot cut around the outside perforations only.

Step 14
Using the largest picot square die cut out a piece of dark blue parchment paper, I used the brightest side facing upwards. Cut a piece of white card stock to measure 18cms x 18cms and another piece of the blue parchment to measure 18.8cms x 18.8cms.

Mat and layer onto the white card blank using the brads and double-sided tape.

And… voila!

Blimey! What a stunning card that is. Thank you Linda for sharing your tips & tricks with us. They are invaluable, just like you!

Here is the link to all the products used, some of which have some amazing savings! HERE

I love the card sentiment too. Happy days ahead indeed… What a week it has been! One of relief, solemn celebration and hope in my little household here.
But now? Time for some rest πŸ™‚

Travel gently…

Lotsa love, Grace xo

Wow, what a stunning piece of work and a brilliantly detailed tutorial. It was nice to know that the white work took Linda 7 days, I was thinking it was all done in a day. Me thinks I must just learn to be patient with this form of art and accept that it won’t be finished in a day. xxx

It is a beautiful card and beautifully demonstrated. Thank you
I love groovi and would love to have a go but by the time I have completed the Monday, Wednesday and Friday shac, had a go at Friday’s download and any family and friend cards needed for the month I don’t think I can spend any more time crafting without feeling I was neglecting home and family.
If only I wasn’t so slow maybe I could fit more in.
